I’m an educator, a researcher and designer

Clement Abai (ABD)

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I will learn.”

– Benjamin Franklin

Hi, my name is Clement Abai (ABD). I am a Ph.D. Candidate at Oklahoma State University in the Learning, Design and Technology program. I’m an educator, a researcher and designer. My research interest, writing & presentations revolve around Design-Based Research (DBR) and how this research methodology can be applied to different educational context.

“Design is not what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

experience

I specialize in researching, designing and developing learning environments and experiences that are authentic, with a focus on supporting and developing learning. Whether it is face-to-face, online learning or XR learning, my design-based research approach maximizes my technical skills to promote learning across various environments.

Design-Based Research (DBR)

DBR in an educational setting is a research approach that engages an iterative design process to design learning environments and develop knowledge that improves educational practices (Armstrong, M., Dopp, C., & Welsh, J., 2020). The DBR process has four phases (see below): 1. Research, 2. Design, 3. Evaluate and 4. Reflect. To read more about DBR and how I applied this methodology to my research, click the link below.

Four phases of the DBR process

1. Research

Analysis of the problem and exploration of possible interventions by the researcher.

2. Design

Design and implementation of the intervention.

3. Evaluate

Testing of the design to see if it addresses  the problem.

4. Reflect

Reflection on the design principles and effectiveness of the design.

Projects

My projects are categorized into three groups in my portfolio: 1. Research Projects, 2. Class Projects and 3. Cool Projects. My research projects are projects I am currently involved in as a Graduate Research Associate at the Emerging Technologies & Creativity Research Lab and as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Research & Learning Services at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. My class projects highlights some of the projects from my graduate coursework and the cool projects are projects I created or designed to showcase my skills as a designer and developer.
